“As soon as he gets a solo, the air clears up. He has the game of a Sunday child: virtuoso, airy, with almost a perfect sense of swing and an aversion to hard work. “That is what Maartje den Breejen writes about Peter Beets in the Parool.
And Ted Panken from Downbeat Magazine adds in his review of the Blues for the Date album: ‘It’s happy music, chock-a-block with fresh voicings, counter-melodies, and intriguing harmonic choices, and it requires for its proper execution a cohort fully trained in the idiomatic particulars of hard swinging, as Beets and his colleagues most demonstrably are. ‘
Beets, since 1998 permanent pianist of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, is one of the most successful pianists of today.
Blues for the Date consists almost entirely of compositions by his hand; the arrangements are made by Henk Meutgeert, Rob Horsting, Jurre Haanstra and Marius Beets.
The recordings were made during a live concert at the Bimhuis.
