Muziekweb.nl pops in immediately: ‘It has been said before, but the Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw can be considered the best big band of Dutch make. That is obvious when listening to Riffs ‘n Rhythms.’ The CD recorded live in the Amsterdam Bimhuis is then called ‘a big party of popping brass, fierce reeds and a fat swinging rhythm section, under the inspiring leadership of conductor Henk Meutgeert’.
All but two compositions come from Henk Meutgeert, who also signed for all arrangements. That means big band work in the tradition of Count Basie with a lot of variety between, but also inside, the songs. But there are also other influences: for Espece, Meutgeert and trumpet player Ruud Breuls have listened to the collaboration between Gil Evans and Miles Davis on Sketches Of Spain.
In all the pieces of Riffs’ n Rhythms is inscribed by the top of Dutch jazz musicians, such as Jesse van Ruller, Peter Beets, Allard Buwalda and Jan van Duikeren.
