Dutch Songbook is a musical tribute to the Dutch song, by the best big-big band in Europe, in collaboration with the most prominent jazz singer of her generation: Fay Claassen!
The 17-piece Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw led by Dennis Mackrel is one of the best and most swinging big bands in Europe. With a world-class rhythm section, fantastic wind players and soloists who are among the best in the Dutch jazz scene. The Jazz Orchestra performs annually worldwide with top artists of national and international fame. Together with Dutch best jazz singer Fay Claassen they play a groundbreaking concert with the finest songs from Dutch song art, including Herman van Veen, Doe Maar and Ramses Shaffy.
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is the backbone of the jazz program of the Concertgebouw, which is the only concert hall in the world that houses a jazz ensemble alongside a classical orchestra. The Jazz Orchestra regularly works with world-class guest soloists, including Chick Corea, Oleta Adams and Georgie Fame. Chief conductor has been the American Dennis Mackrel since 2016.
Fay Claassen won an Edison and got a gold record: Fay Claassen is among the European top. She is praised for her lyrical improvisations and moving interpretations. For the Dutch Songbook program she devised, she made her choice from the Dutch-language song repertoire. In this theater concert she shows how new music is created when she makes her mark on well-known Dutch songs.
