With the Surinam flute player Ronald Snijders we create the concert and theater performance Kaseko Time, dedicated entirely to kaseko jazz, but also zooms in on Suriname and its music history. In Kaseko Time: The Story, Ronald's house is literally brought to life with virtual and augmented reality.
Ronald Snijders' house is a treasure trove. It breathes the history of Suriname and is full of music. His gigantic collection of instruments, as well as record covers, images and paintings, tell the story themselves and take the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, together with Ronald Snijders and Howard Komproe, on a musical journey through time. With traditional kaseko and kawina from Suriname, but also instrumental jazz, new music by Ronald, comedy and spoken word, this theater performance is as diverse as Surinamese music history itself.
For this performance we collaborate with:
Howard Komproe mc | Ronald Snijders whistle | Yannick Hiwat violin | Setish Bindraban trumpet | Ed Rust/ Al Goodah vocals | Walther Muringen drums | Cherish Snijders percussion | Giovanni Essed kawina drums | Jeangu Macrooy special guest | Ruud Lanfermeijer & Keez Duyves image | Guus Pengel director & story |
About Jazz & Freedom
Whether you ask Brubeck, Monk or Ellington: Jazz = Freedom. There is no other type of music that was as important to the emancipation of African Americans in the United States as jazz was. We also link that movement to Surinamese and Afro-Caribbean music. Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw honors the origins of these genres with Jazz & Freedom, a series of programs with which we pay attention to the history and foundation of jazz, but also make a strong connection with current events. Civil rights, identity, freedom and the role of the past of slavery, the rise of Black Lives Matter and, above all, attention and respect for the Black Atlantic culture are central.
