During the first edition of the Jazz & Freedom festival in collaboration with NiNsee (Nationaal Instituut Nederlands Slavernijverleden en Erfenis or National Institute for the Dutch Slavery History and Heritage) & DeLaMar, we will commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery as part of the Year of Remembrance. We put the diverse and rich music cultures of Curaçao and Suriname in the spotlight together with an all-star line-up of artists who connect tradition and present time in innovative ways.
On Friday 30 June, Randal Corsen and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw have invited a delegation of musical friends: Shirma Rouse, Kris Berry, Tamara Nivillac and Stanley Clementina will make their appearance alongside the orchestra and pianist. Together, they will delve into the musical heritage of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
The second festival day on Saturday 1 July is dedicated to Keti Koti. During a gala concert, Ronald Snijders, Pink Oculus, Humphrey Campbell, Jeannine La Rose, Ed Rust and Jörgen Raymann with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw will add colour to the evening.
1 July: Keti Koti Gala concert
Jazz is inextricably linked to freedom. Freedom from oppression but also freedom of expression, to innovate and to improvise. No other type of music has been as important for the emancipation of African-Americans as jazz. With the new Jazz & Freedom festival, we zoom in on music as part of a constantly ongoing struggle for freedom and equality and explore the genesis of jazz.
