                    Frequently Asked Questions

                    What is JOC Productions?

JOC Productions is the production house of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and intnted as talent development program for emerging creators up to the age of 35. Under the banner of JOC Productions, this creator works as artistic director towards their own production with a self-assembled ‘large ensemble’. JOC supports the artistic director in question with guidance, coaching, and funding. JOC Productions is explicitly intended for young professionals working in the Netherlands to explore new ideas in the field of ‘large ensemble’ music.

Who is invited to apply for JOC Productions?

JOC Productions is open to creators up to the age of 35, residing in the Netherlands, who are at the beginning of their musical career and who wish to develop their first major artistic production of their own via our trajectory.

Do I have to compose and arrange everything myself, or am I allowed to choose another composer and arranger?

With JOC Productions, we want to give composers and band leaders the opportunity to compose and arrange for a large ensemble. So, yes as the initiator you are also the composer. The artistic team of the JOC provides feedback on the composition and arrangements of the music, but if you have a good relationship with an arranger already, that is also an option.

To what extent does my idea need to be fully thought out alreay?

Your idea does not need to be fully developed yet, but your concept must have potential and be convincing. We encourage you to think about how JOC Productions can give a boost to your personal development as a maker. We will ask you questions about the following: What do you want to achieve with your project, how do you translate your personal artistic ideas and development into a cohesive, coherent, and appealing program for the public?

Do I need to have a full team already when applying?

The more thought you have put into it, the better our understanding of your concept will be. If you have musicians you feel are a perfect fit for your production, or a producer or marketer you enjoy working with, be sure to mention them. Keep in mind that the budget is limited and aimed at young creators. Also, bear in mind that your input and knowledge of the project will also be required for many production and marketing matters.

Are there any costs associated with participating in JOC Productions?

JOC Productions is a project of the JOC; as a creator, you are not required to do a financial contribution of your own. It is important to realize that you, the project leader, need to dedicate sufficient time to create this concert series. The JOC commissions a composition assignment, and all participants (performers and crew) are paid according to fair pay standards. You work with a project budget, which you manage yourself in consultation with the JOC.

What is your definition of a ‘large ensemble’?

A ‘large ensemble’ consists of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 18 performers.

What does the timeline for this project look like?

                    March 23 - May 3, 2026: registration open
May 12-13, 2026: live pitches by five selected candidates
                    May 20, 2026: announcement JOC Productions 26/27
September 2026: on sale and start of promotions
From January 2027: premiere + further performances

How many performances do I play? And where?

JOC Productions is a collaboration with BIMHUIS, TivoliVredenburg, Podium Azijnfabriek, and Wilminktheater. At least one presentation of the project will take place at these venues. We expect you to perform four additional gigs and book/arrange these yourself.

Tips and tricks from Lucas Santana, participant JOC Productions 2025

                    JOC Productions 2025

                    JOC Productions presents:

Lucas Santana Grand Orquestra - Candomblé

Brazilian saxophonist Lucas Figueiredo Santana was the first maker to work under the banner of JOC Productions, the new production house of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. In 2025 he brought his project Candomblé to several concert halls in the Netherlands. Santana, with his 10-piece Grand Orquestra and two dancers, presented new compositions that reflect on the rich and complex history of the African diaspora in South America.
